They Win
Alabama’s men’s baseball team has gone unnoticed somewhat because of their football team. Their fans come to all their games wearing Alabama Crimson Tide merchandise. They briefly had a number 1 ranking in 2002.
Billy Donovan is in his 13th season of coaching the Florida Gators men’s basketball team. I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the fans had a Billy Donovan jersey or something as part of their Florida Gators merchandise. It is strange that the team never won their conference title but won the regular season title several times.
The team started off 17-0 a few years ago. This was the best start in this school’s school history. This caught many people off guard because the team was young and led by four sophomores. The team was not ranked in the preseason but they made people hush up. They ended up winning back-to-back national championships. Billy Donovan led the Gators to the NIT Semifinals last year. It was their rebuilding year.
Amanda Butler is coaching the women’s basketball team. Women’s basketball has been played at the school for more than 30 years. Their women’s team is often overlooked because of Tennessee and Georgia, who are in the same division as them. That’s unfortunate for them because they have had some good teams. Tennessee and Georgia get more national spotlight. Carol Ross was the winningest coach in the women’s basketball history at Florida before she starting coaching at Ole Miss, which is where she graduated from.
Coach Andy Landers has coached the women’s basketball team since 1979 at Georgia. He led them to seven regular-season SEC titles and 4 SEC tournament championships. The fans cheered their lungs out as they screamed with their Georgia Bulldogs merchandise. He coached the team to 23 NCAA tournaments and 5 Final Four tournaments. He is the coach with the most wins never to have won it all.
The men’s basketball team is overlooked because of the history of the women’s team. They have also had some good teams.
Trent Johnson is coaching the LSU’s men’s basketball team. He helped the team get ranked nationally for a while in the 2008-09 season. During this time, there were dozens of fans who went to their road games wearing LSU Tigers merchandise.
Rick Barnes is arguably the best of Texas’s men’s basketball coaches. There are other good ones in Texas’s history but there have been more Texas Longhorns merchandise bought while he was coaching than at any other time.
