Coaching Football For The Youth

Football is everybody’s favorite game and now the youth could not help but be part of it, hence the term, youth football. This article will talk about football news which focuses on how to become a coach to a youth football. But before we will be talking about youth football, we’ll start talking about the history of football first.

American football’s history can be traced back to the early versions of rugby football. These two popular games have their origin in varieties of football played in UK back in the middle of the 19th century wherein a ball is being kicked at a goal or being ran over a line.

Walter Camp, known as the Father of American Football instituted the rules of the game – from American football to rugby. The changes include the following: line of scrimmage and down-and-distance rules. Back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, college coaches Eddie Cochems, Knute Rockne, Amos Alonzo Stagg and Glen “Pop” Warner helped out in putting up the newly introduced forward pass. Collegiate football became more popular as it started being the dominant version of the sport in the US for the first half of the twentieth century. College football is widely popular in the US as it is famous for its very fierce rivalries.

In 1892, William “Pudge” Heffelfinger was part of the origin of professional football when he had a contract worth $500 to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association versus the Pittsburgh Athletic Club and in 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed. Later on, the league changed its name to National Football League (NFL) after two years and they eventually became the major league of American football. Initially, it is a sport of Midwestern industrial towns in the US and since then professional football became popular. Football’s fame is usually traced back in 1958 during the NFL Championship Game and it was a contest that has been labeled as the “Greatest Game Ever Played”

Now, for the main topic of this article which is about youth football and how one should coach them. Coaching is a noble profession since you don’t just teach kids about the basics of football but also life lessons and of course being a role model for them. It is the goal of a coach to instill quality values such as confidence, sportsmanship, discipline and teamwork. To apply these values to the game of football could help you to have winners not just in the field but also outside the field. The following are steps as to how you could coach kids play football.

Rules – At the start of the season, inform the players as well as their parents about the rules. Make sure that they are able to understand the rules for attendance, practices, player participation, fundraising, effort, and of course, sportsmanship. Through that, everybody would know what to expect and there are no surprises during the season.

Time Management - You won’t be able to use the football field for a longer period of time so do not  waste performing extensive conditioning drills. Use your given time wisely and teach “real” football during these sessions. Kids want to have fun and learn the game and that’s the sole reason why they signed up for.

Drills -  This needs to be done but you have to limit your practice since as a coach, you must be teaching your kids life skills like developing the discipline to work out and perform interval training all by themselves. Make sure you will be able to develop the child’s love of the game first, but keep them accountable for it.

Morale – As coach, you should be able to end your sessions on a high note. Most coaches run sprints or laps at the end of the practice and players don’t like that. Instead, what you will do is to have special team drills like kickoff returns or punt coverage for your end-of-practice conditioning drills. You’ll not just put them in shape but also making it fun and teaching great football skills at the same time.

Playbook - In the world of youth football, it is better to run a few plays well than run many plays quite poorly. You should be able to pick four to five plays as the core of your strategy and practice the execution until the your players could run them in their sleep and that would be the time when you should you start introducing new plays.
